Plastic Clever School launch

Our Eco Council led today’s whole school assembly to launch our Plastic Clever Schools campaign. They gave us some quite alarming facts about the amount of single use plastic found in our oceans.
53Every year children for each year group ae elected for fulfil the role. They can be easily identified around school as they wear their Eco Council badges proudly.
The Eco Council attend meetings every 3 weeks and run various campaigns and projects. For example we have ‘Cut you Carbon’ every November – not only does this encourage good habits and ultimately reduce our carbon footprint, it also saves us and our families money.
Eco-Schools is a global programme engaging 19.5 million children across 67 countries, making it the largest educational programme on the planet.
For nearly 25 years Eco-Schools has been empowering children to drive change and improve their environmental awareness through the simple Seven-Step framework in order to achieve the international Eco-Schools Green Flag award.
Eco-Schools develops pupils’ skills, raises environmental awareness, improves the school environment and creates financial savings for schools as well as a whole host of other benefits

53Unfortunately, Y6 couldn’t make the whole school plastics assembly due to other commitments but the wonderful Y6 Eco Council representatives stepped in and delivered the assembly for us in class. They did a wonderful job!

Reception Class have been lucky to take part in a series of ‘grow with us’ sessions led by the Food for Thought initiative. This week we grew our own bean plants and are looking forward to developing the school gardens over the coming weeks.
16In Y6 we learned that Sikh people are called to serve the planet by not wasting resources. We made links to the Catholic Social Teaching Value of stewardship of God’s creation. We put posters up around school to encourage members of our school community to not waste water, electricity and food.
297Y6 have been learning about Sikhism this week. They discovered that Sikh people do acts of service called Sewa. Y6 chose to do a litter pick, inspired by our eco councillors, to serve our school community. We reflected on how our act of service made us feel and the people we served through our actions.
298Our new Eco Council have had a busy first half term organising Fairtrade Fortnight. They delivered a whole school assembly on current Fairtrade issues & organised fundraising by selling raffles tickets for our annual Fairtrade hamper. The money raised will support global Fairtrade initiatives to ensure farmers get a fair deal for their goods.

Representatives from our Eco Council and School council had a fascinating and fun filled visit to Gillmoss Recycling Discovery centre. We learnt so much about the importance of recycling correctly as well as visiting the factory to see recycling in action!

Today we were privileged to be invited to take part in Liverpool Schools Parliament at the magnificent Liverpool Town Hall. Representatives from our Rights Respecting and Eco Council had the opportunity to meet our Lord Mayor and take part in a series of debates focusing on environmental issues in our schools. We came away feeling truly inspired with how we can really make a difference and look forward to adressing some of these initiatives in school right away.

We had such a fun morning having a full camping experience in the forest. We sang songs and toasted marshmallows by the fire, built dens, enjoyed camping themed stories in the barn and even tested out the sleeping bags!

This week the School Council and Eco Council worked together to plan and deliver a pre loved uniform sale. It was a great success and very well supported by our school community, raising much needed funds which will allow us to continue our projects next school year. Thank you to everyone who supported us!

Year 5 held a meaningful collective worship all about how we are the stewards of creation. We should follow the advice of Sofia the Sloth.
161Year 2 are very excited to have had a response from 10 Downing Street following our persuasive letters about stopping plastic pollution.
700We have been learning about the importance of giving farmers a fair price for their produce, such as coffee, cocoa and bananas. The fair trade symbol lets us know that farmers have been given a fair price, look for this symbol when shopping. Catholic Social Teaching about Solidarity teaches us that by using these products we are standing together as one with our global family.
At the end of our Fair trade fortnight, we had a raffle to win a hamper filled with Frair Trade goodies. As you can see the children were very pleased with their prizes.
